A programme of quality assurance is considered essential for microbiological testing.
This
programme should cover the whole process from sample collection to the reporting of
results.
The laboratory should have appropriate facilities, in terms of accommodation, staff,
equipment, techniques, appropriate and safe working practices, efficient and timely
reporting, and effective management procedures to ensure a safe and efficient laboratory.
It should operate a system of internal quality control and, where necessary, take part in
appropriate external quality control schemes.
